Dragon's Needle Embroidery Guild - Newsletter December 2009 & 'Queens Basket Challenge'

Dear honourable Lords and Ladies, gentle members of the "Dragon's Needle Embroidery Guild" and "-eMail Group"!

________________ ~*~ ________________
"Queens Basket Challenge"

Some ladies showed interest in the second Guild Badge I made:
http://dragonsembroiderers.blogspot.com/2009/11/another-guild-badge-finished.html

Therefore I decided to challenge the Guild Members who would like to own this badge - the first lady or lord who sends me at least 5 selfmade items for the Queens Basket (depending on arrival in my irl mailbox), will get the Guild Badge!

If you are interested please let me know - btw. I will post a picture of the items you send me at the Embroidery Workshop Blog :)

Please don't forget about the Queens Basket - Their Majesties can only give presents away if there are some people who provide presents for the Queens Basket!
For example - I will never forget my first coin at my very first SCA event nor the lovely embroidered hanky that I got when I received my AoA - therefore please don't forget that even a small gift has the power to make someone else very happy! :)
________________ ~*~ ________________

...and now back to business...

Christmas is near and already brought a great pre-christmas present for the Guild - Their Majesties signed and sealed the Guild Charter at University and I was able to bring the Guild Charter and its seal undamaged back to Vienna (Austria) again.
I took as many pictures as possible at University and tagged the photos where you can see the signing and sealing of the Guild Charter for you: http://www.flickr.com/photos/racaire/tags/signingoftheguildcharter/

Furthermore I would like to thank the ladies who attended my class at University or who thought about attending but had to work - I very enjoyed this two hours :) - and I would also like to thank the Guild Members and ladies who attended the official Guild Meeting and everyone who displayed his/her work at the A&S display.

I am also very happy to inform you that four ladies decided to join the Dragon's Needle Embroidery Guild.

...btw. I was able to take more pictures at several museums - you can find a short link summary at my embroidery blog: http://embroidery.racaire.at/?p=2269 and I would like to point you especially to my photos taken at Schloss Gottorf: http://www.flickr.com/photos/racaire/sets/72157622724787635/ (cross stitch, silk embroidery,...)

Guild Membership Roll:
The gentle ladies Sorcha Fhionn inghean ui/Ruairc, Petronilla of London, Astrid Thorvaldsdottir and Perdita von Bremen joined the Guild - now we have 46 members.

Guild Charter:
The Guild Charter was signed and sealed at University in November.

Soon the challenge is over and many of the 'Something to keep you warm II' challenge projects aren't finished yet - therefore I decided to keep the challenge blog open that everyone (including me) can finish the started projects, but the challenge won't be extended to a 3rd year.
- The challenge 2010 - during the Guild Meeting at University we decided to start an open Guild Challenge to make 'coat of arms' Wallhangings that can be used as decoration for kingdom and smaller events - more information will follow soon :)

Kingdom University Pictures online! :)

Finally my photos taken at the Kingdom Universtiy near Hamburg are online now:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/racaire/sets/72157622701301219/

Kingdom University was very interesting and I think my class was a success because it was a lot of fun - hopefully the class will result in many new Klosterstich projects and I am very looking forward to see the results :)

Furthermore I am very happy to tell that the charter of the Dragon's Needle Embroidery Guild was signed by Their Majesties Judith and Gerhardt and King Gerhardt sealed the charter with the front gem of the crown of Drachenwald :)

...and last but not least - the second Guild Meeting was very interesting.
Many thanks to Gunnhild, Eleanora, Katherina and Rakonczay for attending the Guild Meeting.
I also want to thank the other ladies who attended the Guild Meeting but are no members by now.
Just a short summary for everyone who is interested:
We discussed the possibility of the Guild participating in the 'Coronation Cloak for Frankmark' project but we think that as long as no details are known a further discussion is more or less useless.
We had a great idea for a new challenge concerning a new wall decoration for events - you will get to know more as soon as I worked out the details :)

Many thanks to everyone who made this event possible!

Dragon's Needle Embroidery Guild - Newsletter October - Guild Charter approved, new member, challenge end near & University!

Dear honourable Lords and Ladies, gentle members of the "Dragon's Needle Embroidery Guild" and "-eMail Group"!

The leaves are turning from green into brown, it's getting colder and Winter is preparing its journey to the northern part of our beautiful kingdom - but I hope I am able to warm up your feelings for the next months and events by telling you two great news:

I am very happy to tell you that Their Majesties Queen Judith and King Gerhardt have approved our Guild Charter - the Guild Charter of the Dragons Needle Embroidery Guild will be signed at University in November and Their Majesties told me that a Drachenwald seal is available and that Their Majesties would love to sign and seal the Guild Charter - this will probably take place during State Business in the morning at Crown and I would be happy if the Guild Members who attend University and have some spare time would join me during this great moment.

Furthermore I am also very happy to add a new member to the Membership Roll - Lady Gunnhild von Brunswiek, who does beautiful Blackwork, decided to join the Guild - hopefully I will be able to take more pictures of her lovely work during my stay in Aventiure before and after University in November - I promise that I will upload the pictures to my Flickr Account again and post a direct link at the Dragon's Embroidery Workshop blog.

I also would like to remind you that all members of the Dragon's Needle Embroidery Guild (42 members by now, an up to date list of the members can be found at the Workshop Blog, follow the link underneath 'Guild Membership Roll') have the right and privilege to wear the Guild Badge!

It was a great pleasure for me to follow the other challenge projects like Anya's embroidery, Jahanara's ID Cloaks (here a great picture of one of them) and Siubhan's cloak project during the the 'Something to keep you warm' challenge 2008.

Guild Charter

fyi - I got a very good message from our gentle Queen Judith:

The Guild Charter is approved!

Dragons Needle Embroidery Guild – Guild Charter

1. Purpose

The purpose of the Guild is to encourage historic embroidery and fibre arts and to promote the art and enjoyment of historical needlework within the context of the SCA.

2. Membership

Membership to the Guild is open to every person who is interested in embroidery and/or fibre arts regardless of skill or level and who is willing to support the Guild’s purpose. Members should, in general, live inside the borders of the Kingdom of Drachenwald, but because of the history of our kingdom everyone who has a relationship to Drachenwald may join the Guild. Membership in the Guild is strictly voluntary.

2.1. Start of Membership
A person indicates their willingness to join the Guild by sending a request to the Guild Head or the regional Guild Head (who will forward the request to the Guild Head) and by providing following information:
- mundane name:
- SCA name:
- SCA group:
- SCA region:
- SCA membership-number:
- contact information:
- optional information - your embroidery techniques:
- optional information - homepage/blog:
The membership starts with the confirmation by the Guild Head and will be posted at the Dragon’s Embroidery Workshop Blog (label: ‘Guild Member-List’).

2.2. End of Membership
The membership ends when a member indicates their willingness to leave the Guild. In cases of serious breaches of conduct the membership of a member may also be ended by the Guild Head.

3. Guild Badge

Every member of the Dragon’s Needle Embroidery Guild has the right to wear the registered Guild Badge: “(Fieldless) On a dragon passant coward sable a needle palewise Or.”

4. Guild Structure

4.1. Kingdom / Guild Head
The Guild Head shall guide the Guild, support the Guild’s purpose, and represents the Guild in all matters concerning the Guild and the SCA. The Guild Head oversees the activities of the Guild and reports semi-annual to the Kingdom Minister of Arts & Sciences - the reports are due May 15 and November 15. New deputies may be created if and when required in the discretion of the Guild Head.
When the officiating Guild Head wants to retire, the Guild Head may appoint a volunteer for this position. If this is not possible, the Regional Guild Heads may choose a Guild Head among the members of the Guild, if a vote is necessary the person with the majority of votes will become the new head. As soon as new Guild Head is chosen, the Kingdom Minister of Arts & Sciences must be informed. The position of the Guild Head is restricted to members of the Guild.

4.2. Regional / Regional Guild Heads
The Guild Head encourages the regions to work as independently as possible to ensure the regional needs are met. Therefore the regions are encouraged to choose a Regional Guild Head among their own members or appoint a volunteer for this position. The Regional Guild Heads (also called Local Guild Heads) oversee the activities of the regional Guilds and report to the Guild Head. If the members of a region choose a Regional Guild Head or the Regional Guild Head changes, the change must be reported immediately to the Guild Head. If a region has no Regional Guild Head, the Guild Head oversees the activities of the region. The position of the Regional Guild Head is restricted to members of the Guild.

4.3. Local / Local Guilds & Interest Groups
Local guilds and Interest Groups should be encouraged. Affiliation with the Kingdom Guild is not required, but strongly encouraged. Regional Guild Heads should offer all possible assistance to Local Guilds & Interest Groups.

5. Guild Charter

The purpose of the Guild Charter is to contain the rules/statutes for the most important points concerning the Guild and its members and must be kept as simple and uncomplicated as possible. Copies of the Guild Charter which the Guild operates under are available from the Guild Head.

5.1 Guild Charter changes
Proposals for changes or additions concerning the Guild Charter may be submitted to the Guild Head by all members.
Changes or additions to the Guild Charter may be created if and when required in the discretion of the Guild Head. The Kingdom Minister of Arts & Sciences and the Guild members must be informed about every change to the Guild Charter immediately.

6. Guild Program

Guild Programs may be established by the Guild Head to encourage study and development of needlework skills, and shall offer a forum for those who wish to measure their progress and skill in a self-paced non-competitive environment.
When established, the Guild Programs will be available from the Guild Head as stand alone appendix to the Guild Charter.

6.1 Guild Program members
The Guild Program participation is restricted to members of the Guild. A member indicates their willingness to join the Guild Programs by sending a request to the Guild Head. Membership starts with confirmation by the Guild Head.

6.2 Guild Program changes & additions
The Guild Head oversees the Guild Programs. Changes or additions to the Guild Program may be created if and when required in the discretion of the Guild Head and must be reported to the Guild Program members as soon as possible.

6.3 End of Guild Program membership
The membership ends when a member indicates their willingness to leave the Guild Program.

7. Guild Challenges & Projects

Annual challenges and projects should be encouraged. To serve the guild's purpose the challenges & projects should be also open to all SCA members, if this is possible because of the challenge/project theme.

8. A&S and Guild Displays

The members of the guild are encouraged to display their work at A&S and Guild Displays. Whenever possible, the person responsible for the Guild Display should cooperate with the person responsible for the A&S Display.

I want to thank Mistress Jaelle for her great help concerning the content of the Guild Charter and also our gentle Queen Judith de Northumbria and our gentle King Gerhardt von Wustenburg for the fast approval.

Next step - writing down the document to get it signed by our Majesties at University! :)

Scarletworked coif action shot

An update, I found at least one decent picture of Helwig wearing the coif and forehead cloth at Midsummer coronation in Edricus' album from the event. Check it out here.

Monday 7 September 2009

Scarletworked coif

Hello fellow embroiderers.

This summer I worked on a small project of embroidery for my Laurel, Helwig Ulfsdotter. I made a forehead cloth and coif set for her elevation. I took the pattern for the coif from Janet Arnold's Patterns of Fashion 4, and the forehead cloth that goes with this coif has the same dimensions as many extant forehead cloths kept at the Boston Museum of Fine arts (roughly 40 cm x 20 cm).

The embroidery pattern is taken from an extant coif, found via Christie's auction site. The thread used is Splendor silk. It comes as 12 ply, and I used two threads, so each length of thread went a long way. It was fantastic to work with. I used stem stitch throughout the embroidery. I think the result was well worth the effort put in, and I can't wait to make myself a matching set of forehead cloth and coif.

Unfortunately I have no good photos of Mistress Helwig wearing the set. I'll try to get one though.

Dragon's Needle Embroidery Guild - Newsletter September - 'Pennsic Gift Basket' & upcoming University

Dear honourable Lords and Ladies, gentle members of the "Dragon Needle Embroidery Guild" and "-eMail Group"!

Summer is leaving the main part of our wonderful kingdom, Autumn is rushing in and again a new newsletter is on its way to you :)

I want to thank all members who contributed to this years 'Pennsic Gift Basket' - it was a great pleasure for me to see the pictures of the lovely items that have been donated by the talented and generous artisans of our kingdom.
I also would like to thank the members of the Embroidery guild of Aarnimetsä for contributing gifts for the Queens Tea gift.

Furthermore I am very happy to forward the following message from Meisterinne Katheryn Hebenstreitz to you:

_~*~_

"Greetings to the members of the Dragon's Needle Embroidery Guild!

I have finally managed to put up a few pictures of the gift basket our King and Queen could hand over to Their Majesties of Gleann Abhann at Pennsic this year.
Thank you so much to every single one of you that contributed to this glorious basket! It really was incredible!
You can find the pictures on the page I have linked to below. But I would like to point out that I did not photograph every single item and there are many more items I wish I had taken pictures of...
Also – thre are some pictures included of little embroidered bags for the Queens Tea gift. They were made by the Embroidery guild of Aarnimetsä. (It was Countess Fiona that was responsible for gathering items for Queens tea gifts.)

http://hebenstreitz.zoomin.se/A101990

And now to my next piece of buisness.
There is a great need for items for next years Pennsic gift basket!
Let theese pictures inspire you – start a small project now – that gives you almost a year to finish it!
Help our upcoming Kings and Queens to show that Drachenwald indeed is the grandest of realms when it comes to the Arts and Sciences!
(Yeah – we do kick ass on the battlefield aswell – it was a pleasure watching Drachenwald salying their oponents on the battlefield!)
I will once again work though out the year to gather items for largess and gift basket for next years Pennsic.
Countess Fiona has graciously agreed to once again collect items for Queens Tea gifts – those gifts need not be large but we are in need of items for ALL the other Kingdoms of the Known world. Once again I urge
you to start now – then the work will not be all that tough.

If you have any quetsions, feel free to contact me at
amadejska@gmail.com

In service
Katheryn Hebenstreitz"

My website is back!

OK so it was pointed out to me some months ago that my website had been hacked. Ever since then my web forrays have been a bit of an excercise in frustration, until today! I don't know what I did differently than the last 20 times, but http://www.thepurplelotus.org is now up and running again. I'm not sure how up to date it is, because I've also been struggling with the new version of Notebook and updates have been frustrating as well, but I'm one step closer to a functioning, regularly update online portfolio!
Just had to share!

Dragon's Needle Embroidery Guild - Newsletter August

Dear honourable Lords and Ladies, gentle members of the "Dragon Needle Embroidery Guild" and "-eMail Group"!

I hope you all have a wonderful summer time and enjoy some of the wonderful events of our kingdom - hopefully we will get more nice summer days before autumn and the cold days come back...

Now back to guild business:

Guild Membership Roll:
I am very sorry to tell that Lady Adelina decided to leave the guild but I hope that she will maybe rejoin in the future.
41 members by now

Guild Charter:
The second draft of the basic guild charter is now in the hands of Mistress Jaelle for proof reading and therefore still in progress - I want to thank Mistress Jaelle very much for her kind and great help.
Still in progress

Guild Blog - Dragon's Embroidery Workshop:
If you would like to join the Workshop and share your work, please don't hesitate to write me an eMail!

And now some great news - after the Insulae Draconis Interest groub now the Aarnimetsä Embroidery Guild also started a blog:
"Welcome to Aarnimetsä Embroidery Basket!
Aarnimetsä Embroidery Guild has finally got it´s own blog in Finnish. Everyone interested in embroidery is welcome. If you want to write in English, it´s ok, and I can Finnish your text in the comment section.
Following the excellent example of Lady Racaire, the Guilmaster of Kingdom level Embroidery Guild and founder of the Dragon Embroidery Workshop we want to create a safe and helpful environment for the Aarnimetsän embroiderers, and wish it will encourage embroiderers to excell in their work.
This blog is ment to become the meeting point for Aarnimetsän embroiderers, a place where they can show off their projects, get answers to their questions and inspiration for new projects. This way the beautiful embroideries are also shown to the popoulus.
I wish this blog will encourage new members to begin with embroidery and 'old' embroiderers to start new and interesting projects. If you got interested and want to join, feel free to email me!
best regards,
Eilgri
http://kirjontakori.blogspot.com/"

At this point I want to thank Mistress Bridget one more time, who started the Dragon's Scriptorium and inspired me to start the Dragon's Embroidery Workshop blog.

...and here a summary of related blogs:
- Insulae Draconis Fibre Arts Interest Group
- Aarnimetsä Embroidery Basket

Guild Projects / Challenges:
- The challenge 2009 'Something to keep you warm II'
There is still some time to start and finish a project - if you would like to participate please contact Mistress Anya, Lady Jahanara or me. :)

Misc. Projects / Challenges:
- A&S 50 Challenge
- A&S 50 Challenge Drachenwald Blog

I really can't repeat it too often: Please keep on sharing your wonderful work - regardless if embroidery, woven tapestry, illumination, wood-, leather- or metal-work,.. every project is a great inspiration for other people!

University:
Now to another information that makes me very happy - my reservation for University (November) is approved and my flight is also booked by now, therefore I would like to know:
- ...who will also attend University?
- ...who is interested to attend one of my classes (Refilsaum or Klosterstich)? - a help to decide if I should offer to hold a class.
- ...who would like to attend an Dragon's Needle Embroidery Guild meeting and/or get-together at University?
- ...who would like to join me at the Dragon's Needle Embroidery Guild display? - hopefully hold again with the A&S display.
I am very looking forward to see you at University! :)

...and I forward a message from Lady Jahanara to you - "From the Office of the ID MoAS" concerning the A&S at Raglan Fair and ask everyone of you who will attend this event to assist her by bringing items for the A&S display:
"Greetings exhaulted artisans,
I apologize for the late nature of this notice and hope it reaches you all in time. This year at Raglan Fair, in ID, we will again have a tent dedicated to the Arts and Sciences. We will not have a formally judged competition, but there will be a populace choice. I would like to ask all artisans to bring items to display. I also ask that you bring items to work on with your bretheren! The tent will be available for crafting and socialising Thursday through Sunday. Please plan to display any items and to join your fellow artisans in companionship and productivity!
Please feel free to contact me to let me know you will be participating and with any questions!

Tudor rose

Finally, the rose is done. But in the meantime, don't ask me how, a yellowish stain has founds its way onto the fabric constituting the napkin, I think I need to use the embroidery for something else. Suggestions?

New Textile challenge :)

For your information - a new Textile challenge starts first of June and I may forward you the following text concerning the new challenge:

"Greetings to the Populace of Drachenwlad
I come forth to issue a Textile challenge
This challenge is specifically set towards those that have not had the opportunity to sew a garment/object by hand.
Sewers that are experienced in hand stitching items will not be excluded, but this is meant as a chance for those with no experience in this realm to get a start.
The Challenge I propose is that all persons joining the challenge pick a garment or object of textile nature, no matter how small or large, i.e. a pilgrim bag, a Coif or any type of hat, socks, flag, gloves etc., and have at least one form of documentation for its existence during the SCA time period.
Acceptable forms of documentation for this project will be paintings/woodcuts/drawings with the desired object in it or a picture of the desired object.
The challenge starts first of June and will end one year later. People can join the challenge at any time during this year.
A blog will be made where all participants can post pictures and descriptions of their progress (http://first-timehandsewingchallenge.blogspot.com/).
All interested in joining this challenge please contact me at Gottfriedkilianus @ yahoo . com

I'm still here and working!

pilecompleteWell I've got the axe and pile complete, now I just have to go round and round and round! I'm really pleased with how this one is turning out so far! The stitches are pretty even. I just hope I can keep my patience and keep them as even and small throughout the rest. I've decided to embroider the roundels on smaller bits and then sew them on seperately. This means that I can go ahead and put tthe hood together. This was the main impetus for this decision. The cashmere hood I embroidered for Odo is rarely worn, because it's too warm 90% of the time. The linen counterpart should not have this issue!

Greetings to all,

Here my first needle-book. It´s peal cotton on wool. The pattern on the front page was coined by the book “Fibel- und Gürtelmode der Hochgotik” from Gösta Ditmar-Trauth, page 42. The Flower is from a brooch (Fürspan) from Ekklesia from Straßburger Münster from the 1230 ages. The rest was fantasy.

dragons are fun but sometimes...

... you just need to do something else. This is my attempt at sidestepping. This napkin will go into the gift basket too, but the silk is so fine (almost filament) and has been treated ruthlessly in our dyeing workshop so it fights me tooth and nails and the backside looks abyssmal even though I tried to take care. I am not sure I can leave it as a napkin. sigh.

Pennsic Queens Basket 2

I finished some more Handkerchiefs for the Pennsic Queens Basket
Material:
Green New Wool with Cotton
Yellow Silk from Gütermann
Green Silk from Madeira
Red Perlgarn from Anchor/Mez
Gold Thread from Anchor/Mez

I use normal Interfacing and thats not so ideal with the Gold Thread.Yesterday I buy some Interfacing called "Soluvlies".It is water-soluble and its better for embroidery on Dark Fabrics

Saturday 14 February 2009

I have been honored by the graceful ladies Alenn von Horn and Johanna von Steinwedel by having been asked to contribute to their *napkin project* for the queen's guft basket. My name is Elisande Walters and I have asked to share my results. So far I have managed 6 napkins. the first five are broad chainstich in a number of materials.
MEZ black cotton twist, single strand on Linen cotton blend, Black Linen on Linen (the thread is not as easy to manipulate giving a rather *naive* look to that napkin (I'll still finish it, maybe somebody likes it) Black Linen on Cotton Linen Blend looks to my surprise a lot better. In the middle is Silk on Linen but the thread I used is clearly too thick for this kind of work, then the less bidable white Linen on Linen which I think turned out very fine even though the thread isn't really thinner than the Silken one. at the bottom I uses again a single thread of MEZ cotton twist, plus Mettlers metallic sewing thread. sorry for the white thread that came to ly on it while I took the pictures.

The challenge 2009 'Something to keep you warm II' started recently:

"It's that time again! This year we decided to stick with the same theme, to enable our very ambitious participants to finish, while setting a new challenge for anyone who wants to join in new this time around. Items can include anything that you use to keep you warm, such as hats, gloves, coats and cloaks.

Challenge Requirements: The embroidery should also be done at least 25% in a medieval stitch not normally used by you and/or 25% in new documented design elements. The project challenge is open to everyone, so please email us to be put on the list of participants and to be invited to join the challenge blog! And keep in mind that the challenge isn't limited to one item per person, if you've got the motivation feel free to make more!

Misc. Projects / Challenges:

- A&S 50 Challenge Drachenwald Blog - ...a blog where the participants of the A&S 50 Challenge living in Drachenwald may share their works, ask questions, encourage each other and generally support one another along the way.
- A Crafty Challenge - ...I got to know about a lovely little challenge called "A Crafty Challenge", that is spreading like fever around the internet and supported by some needlework, pottery, costuming,... bloggers whom blogs I read regulary and I would like to let you know about this challenge too, because I think its a great fun and some of you could be interested (sorry, but my list for gifts is full by now):
To join this challenge just post following text at your blog:

"The first five people to respond to this post will get something made by me! My choice. For you.

This offer does have some restrictions and limitations:
- I make no guarantees that you will like what I make!
- What I create will be just for you.
- It'll be done this year.
- You have no clue what it's going to be. It may be a story. It may be poetry. I may draw or paint something. I may bake you something and mail it to you. Who knows? Not you, that's for sure!
- I reserve the right to do something extremely strange.

The catch? Oh, the catch is that you have to put this in your journal as well. We all can make stuff!"

...and watch out for participants who still are waiting for their fifth person to respond... - ...yeah, we all can make stuff and last but not least: don't forget to have fun! :)

...and now a short update concerning the Pennsic Giftbasket - if you would like to read the text with the basic information about the Pennsic Giftbasket again:

Pennsic giftbaskets update

So you have made this wonderful thing that will be part of the Pennsic giftbasket.
But who will ever see the beautiful thing you made and will the recipent know who the artist was?
It is important that you include a note stating at least your SCA name and perhaps an e-mail address so that the Drachenwald Crown can thank you properly for your contribution and if you can – add some details about the materials and techniques used – some documentation is always very appriciated! Your e-mail address will also make it possible for the recieving Crown to send you a thank you note after they have gotten the fabulous Drachenwald giftbasket.

Also, if you make it to Double Wars or if you can send your contribution to the giftbasket with someone attending the event – your item will be put on the giftbasket display!
This is done so that we all will know what great things are being sent off to Pennsic and what skilled artisans this Kingdom has!

Thank you once again for answering this call for aid. Your work is very appriciated!

Meisterine Katheryn Hebenstreitz
